Q&A with Em Taylor
Q&A with Em Taylor
About the book
Q: What inspired you to write this book?
A: Lynsay Sands Argeneau series, a lesbian and a long discussion about vampires versus Star Trek.
Q: How long did it take you to write the book?
A: Three years and three attempts. Which is insane. It normally takes me two months.
Q: Did you find the erotic scenes hard to write? If so, why?
A: Not really. I find kissing scenes hard to write and the choreography of tongues and teeth etc. It’s not really what kissing is like.
Q: Do you have a favourite scene in the book? If so, which?
A: It’s a toss up between the bitey blow-job and when Kate escapes while drunk. It’s not often you get to write about a woman sinking her teeth into a man’s crown jewels and he likes it. And I like cute drunks.
About You
Q: How old were you when you started writing?
A: 39. I was a late bloomer. I wrote smutty Star Trek Voyager Fan Fiction. That was in 2011
Q: Does your family know you write erotica? If so, how do they feel about it? If not, why not?
A: They know I write erotic romance. My books span quite a range of heat levels. They don’t know about my other pen name that writes the really hot stuff but then I indulge my kinks there. She’s Isla Munro.
Q: How many books have you written? Which is your favourite?
A: I believe I’m finishing my 20th book if you put together my books by Isla, my own books , 3 that need to be republished and the one I’m currently working on.
Q: Are you going to write more books? If so, will you continue to do so under the erotic genre?
A: I’ll continue to write. I write the heat level I think the story deserves so some of it will be erotic and some just smutty.
Your Views
Q: Do you think people are becoming more accepting of erotica?
A: I think people like to think they’ve become accepting of it but they haven’t really. They read 50 Shades, they got their jollies and now they’re back to Ian Rankin. It’s a like a kid reading the Story of O and not quite understanding it but knowing there were dirty words in it.
Q: What do you think most erotic authors do wrong?
A: Try to follow the trends. Write your own stuff. Ignore what’s selling on Amazon. Write what pleases you.
Q: Have you self-published? If so, what have been the negatives and positives?
A: I’ve done both traditional and self-publishing. Self-publishing is expensive and seems pretty unrewarding. I went through a short phase of making good money on Regency books then I got ill and couldn’t keep throwing out books and I lost my audience. I changed sub-genres and my audience didn’t follow. So you don’t have the in-built audience you have at a publisher and the support network. That said, I get to be my own boss and I get to make my own decisions. One day it will pay off.
Q: When reading, do you prefer eBook or print? Why?
A: I prefer ebook as I have bad wrists and it’s easier to hold.
Q: In your opinion, what elements make a good erotic scene in a book?
A: Anything that turns me on. If I don’t want to head for my bunk, then it’s not doing its job.
Just for Fun
Q: If you could be a character from one of your books, who would you be and why?
A: Louise form A Cowboy Wedding in Scotland. Why? ‘Cause Jake. You need to read about Jake. I love Jake. I’m sad that I gave Jake to Louise and couldn’t make him real for me.
Q: What’s your favourite board game?
A: Monopoly. I’m rubbish at holding on to money in real life but I’m fab at Monopoly.
Q: Who is your favourite author?
A: Unfair question. Em Petrova, Lynsay Sands, Molly Harper, Mary Balogh. Sarah MacLean,
Q: What is your all time favourite book?
A: No comment
Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: An actress
Q: Tea or coffee?
A: Coffee
Q: Summer or Winter?
A: Summer
Q: Brad Pitt or George Clooney
A: George, the Silver fox
Q: What’s next for you?
A: Writing the sequel to Discovered before the people who read the first one kill me because they’ve been waiting for the sequel for over a year. Then more romantic comedy with added extra smut. A few more books in the works for Isla Munro. Lots of plans.
