1, As a writer, do you like to experience the sexual acts that you write about in order to write about them convincingly? Some things, yes, I've either experienced or would like to experience, but not all the things I write about are personally appealing to me. I don't write about things that I can't at least appreciate, sexually—there are certain acts I can't even mentally get "into", so I leave them to the authors who can—but I do like to dabble (literarily) in lots of different aspects of sexuality and sexual lifestyle, even if they're not aspects I'd explore in the bedroom. It's interesting.
2. Are there any sexual acts that you have written about that you are yet to experience? If so, what? And do you think you ever will? Certainly there are, and certainly there are some I don't think I'll ever experience. They're not my personal cup of tea. That's okay, though…I enjoy reading to learn about them, hearing them discussed by the folks who do practice them, and exploring them in my stories.
3. What about an erotic scene in a book turns you on the most? I like frank, unapologetic sexual exploration by women. Though I read and write all combinations of characters, I think I find lesbian stories the most personally appealing. I enjoy a blend of emotional and physical imagery surrounding two women together. Soft or rough, romantic or purely to get off…that's what I like most.
4. Does your partner (if you have one) know you write erotica? If so, do they read your work? If they do, do they find it arousing? He does, and he reads it, and he even helps write it sometimes. Sharing it can lead to some lovely personal time for us.
5. Have you ever turned yourself on writing one of your own sex scenes? Yes, it's a very normal thing. Or sometimes I'm already turned on and I write something to draw from that. Sometimes I have to take a break from writing to take care of myself…or let my partner take care of me.
6. Do you ever read one handed? And not because you are stirring the Bolognese ;) All the time. If I buy an erotic romance and I don't end up trying to balance the book and manage other needs as I read it, I consider it something of a waste.
7. What’s the naughtiest, dirtiest thing you have ever written? Give us an excerpt or tell us about the scene. Well, I love to branch out and try new things in my stories so I'm always coming up with new scenes to answer this question with. At the moment I think the naughtiest thing I have out there is a sex party/swingers story called The Holston Street Halloween Party. I love the story immensely. Here's a snippet I hope you'll enjoy…
***
He led me back to the bar and cleared a space between the sex shots and the liquor bottles, then lifted me up to sit me on the edge. Going around the bar he grabbed up a few of the little plastic shotglasses, then called over the party-goers nearby.
“Who wants a drink? Little Red Riding Slut is ready to serve.”
His hand tangled in my hair and he pulled, tilting my head back so I looked up at him.
Pulling the cap on the first shot, he poured the orange liquor into my mouth. Deliberately, though, he drizzled nearly half of it over my chin instead, and it ran down my neck and bare breasts.
I moaned happily at the taste of peaches. An instant later the Big Bad Wolf kissed me, dipping his tongue into my mouth to lap up the taste of it for himself. After the kiss broke, he kept his grip on my hair and popped a second shot, then made a show of pouring it directly over my cleavage.
“C’mon,” he invited the characters closest to us. “Suck it right off her tits.” ***
8. What’s the naughtiest, dirtiest book you have ever read? Probably the dirtiest books I've ever read were the Sleeping Beauty trilogy by Anne Rice. Though, to be honest, I didn't really enjoy them that much. I think the most erotic book I've ever read is Affinity, by Sarah Waters, which is interesting because there's no actual sex scenes in it.
9. Do you use porn as a stimulant for writing erotic scenes? Oh, hell yeah. I consider it valid (and pleasant!) research.
10. Are there any consensual sexual acts that you would never write about? If so, why not? Going back to my earlier response, there are acts I won't write about, ones I don't feel I can appreciate. I understand that others can aroused and satisfied by them, and if I can't appreciate the attraction I don't think I can write it in a way that would satisfy them. Watersports are the first that come to mind.
11. Do you find certain erotic/sexual scenes hard to write? E.g. M/M, F/F, anal sex, bondage. Quite honestly, I find all sex scenes hard to write, but that's because I want each scene to be new and dynamic in and of itself. I don't want to write any scene quite like the ones that have come before. There's a lot of balancing to do, a lot of visualization (and therein comes research!), and a lot of poring through a character's headspace. I don't say it in any sort of negative way, but I do think each scene is a challenge of its own.
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our naughty questions, Brantwijn.
We hope you had fun ;)
